The Winds of Git-mo
A great conversation on Talk of the Nation about the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, pointed out that the facility generates about 25% of its power from wind turbines.
My first thought was, "Golly, that's curious....why?" I can't imagine the Government trying to paint the marginally criminal facility as going green.
A quick search reveals this little gem.
"This is the world's most ancient philosophy, combined with state-of-the-art technology," said Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey M. Johnston, the base's public works officer. "Harnessing the wind is arguably the first technical thing man ever did."
Building a facility to detain folks without any hope of legal support was arguably the second technical thing man ever did.
Guantanamo Bay is unique in that the base is completely self-sustaining. Most U.S. military bases in the United States and overseas get their power and water from municipal sources. But Guantanamo Bay takes no power or water from Fidel Castro's Cuba.
I have no basis for this, but it seems likely that "Fidel Castro's Cuba" might not be all that hip to the idea of having power and water taken from them.
After all, we are paying 2000 gold coins a year to be there.
