It is with a heavy heart I announce the following:
Dora the Explorer Candy Land is gone.
Being an only-child has sheltered me from certain truths that siblinged people probably take for granted.
When my first child was born, almost 5 years ago, I decided (not consciously) that this kid would be brought up in a house that nurtures toys and books. That when we finish playing with something, we put it away, preserving the game/doll/toy for years to come. This actually worked for a bit. I was always a little bit proud when Sayaka spent that extra time putting the little loop of paper back around the Candy Land cards.
Then came Yuuka. How was I to know that the effort of watching two children AND their belongings would be too much? Looking back, when did I lose my affinity for preservation and history? This can not be answered.
But cleaning up the toys and dolls and games at the end of today, I was struck by the following:
You can not play Dora the Explorer Candy Land with only 4 cards and Boots the monkey.
Adding a Swiper the Fox birthday cake topper (thanks, Hallie) will not help. For what is Dora the Explorer Candy Land without Dora? Without the Abuela Ice Cream card that will grant the lucky player passage to damn near the end of the board. Nothing, that's what.
Long live the innocence of only-children!
